Functions for Course Authors

Course Composer

As an author, you use the simple form-based Course Composer to upload and organize existing digital course components created with any desktop application. Sequence your components, incorporating quizzes, tests, questionnaires and polls. You can design courses that are entirely self-paced or "blended" courses, in which you interleave live sessions with the self-study portions. Compose course descriptions using a WYSIWYG content editor that is as easy as using Word, with no HTML knowledge needed. The Training JumpStart™ Portal generates the HTML.

  • PowerPoint
  • Narrated presentations
  • Video files
  • YouTube content
  • Flash files
  • Any audio, video, including Flash created with any desktop tool such as TechSmith's Camtasia, Adobe Captivate or Articulate Presenter or any desktop tool that converts PowerPoint to Flash
  • HTML pages
  • Word
  • Web pages
  • PDF and other formats

The Course Composer lets authors organize content right in their browser, packaging course elements into course modules, course modules into courses, and courses into learning programs or training tracks.

In addition, authors have the option of creating quizzes, tests, questionnaires and polls to associate with any course component. Discussion forums and instructor blogs are available to enhance users' learning experience. For a blended approach, incorporate live sessions.

Sample Course Structures

Scenario 1: Structuring Elements for an Online Course

The Course Composer lets authors select and sequence digital content into a unit of training – a module, a course, a training program.

In Scenario 1, four documents pre-exist—narrated PPT for Lesson 1 and Lesson  2, a videotaped demo, and a reading list. Depending on the presentations, they may be divided into several learning chunks, with quizzes , enhanced graphics and other elements to enhance clarity and appeal.

The course author creates a test in the WYSIWYG training portal editor. Existing digital content is sequenced and packaged with new content as a single module constituting a course. In addition, a course can have a discussion forum and live webinar or face-to-face events can be interspersed, providing opportunities for interaction.

Scenario 2: Structuring Learning Activities for Onboarding New Hires

The Training JumpStart Portal lets authors create a just-in-time training program that leverages existing content. Authors, consulting with the hiring manager,  can thoughtfully sequence learning activities for a new hire using not only existing training content, but also content originally designed for communication or documentation purposes. Link your new hires to these sources along with instructions, questions for self-study, quizzes, and potentially, a new hire buddy assigned at the new person’s location.

In this simplified example:
1. The welcome document provides an orientation to the self-study program. It introduces the new hire to the training activities planned for the first week. Instead of an instructor, a live and local New Hire Buddy is assigned as a resource for questions.
2. The program leverages a recorded quarterly presentation by the CEO.
3. Next are instructions for what content to study on the Company Intranet, including content about the company’s flagship product.
4. This is followed by a (recorded) product demo.
5. Lastly, a self-administered test on the week’s learning, created especially for the program.

A learning program based on new hire’s role follows, potentially spread over several weeks as additional skills and knowledge are required.

Customized versions of courses can be created, sharing common course components. Having a single source per course component reduces errors and streamlines maintenance. Updates are made once and new file versions automatically replace older ones in all the courses containing them.

Training materials created for classroom delivery can be reused or adapted for online, on-demand delivery. Adaptation, as with the adaptation of a novel to a film, is beyond mere transfer of media. Contact us to discuss the materials you plan to take online.
